Preston Move-out Procedures
We've noticed that there are still a lot of questions about moving out, and we wanted to clear a few things up.
Sincerely,
Preston Housing Staff
- In order to move out, you need to sign up for a move out time AT THE FRONT DESK. The list at the desk has all of the times you can move out, which staff member is on duty, and their phone number to contact them. If you gave the time of your last exam to your PC or RT, THIS IS NOT SIGNING UP. Please understand that by knowing when people are leaving, we can plan much more effectively.
- Residents must be out 24 hours after their last exam.
- When you move out, make sure that you throw any trash away in the dumpster beside the Public Health Building beside Preston. Do not leave anything in the hall (trash, futons, lamps, rugs, etc.), and make sure that your room has all furniture that came with it.
Sincerely,
Preston Housing Staff

Provost Concert--Next Wednesday
As a part of the Preston Week celebrations, the Provost Concert will be held on April 14th at 6:30 p.m. For those of you who may not know what exactly the Provost Concert is, it is a lot like a V.O.M.I.T. show, except it is held outside on the back porch and the Preston Green. We expect a lot of students and faculty associates to be present, so bring out your biggest and best talents! It doesn't matter if it's an old talent performed at a previous V.O.M.I.T. or if it's something new--just make sure you come out to perform. The sign-up sheet will be on the front desk from until April 12th, so be sure to stop by and sign up. As always, contact Sam Barfield or Monica Bracey if you have any questions.

Earth Hour This Saturday, 8:30-9:30 p.m.
Earth Hour will be this Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. This is an international event to show solidarity in asking for action on climate change by using zero electricity during that hour. Since its inception three years ago, Earth Hour’s non-partisan approach has captured the world’s imagination and became a global phenomenon. Nearly one billion people turned out for Earth Hour in 2009, involving 4,100 cities in 87 countries on seven continents. Here is the link to the Earth Hour website.
Our sustainability reps, Mackenzie and Edward, are asking for all Prestonites to participate in this. You could go out with some friends for a few hours, play flash light tag in the horseshoe, or even take a nap. However, we do understand that papers may be due or other issues that require electricity, but know that every little bit helps!
And don’t forget--Earth Day is April 22nd!

Preston Government
As this semester rolls on we must begin thinking about next year. This means that we must hold our Preston elections for the moderator and treasurer positions (eventually). Here are some quick thoughts:
- All returning residents are eligible for these positions, even if you weren't involved with government this year.
- They're a good way to get involved on campus, take on a leadership role, and have the chance at doing great things on campus.
- Only returning residents are allowed to vote for these positions.
- Secretary, Wing Liaison, and Senator positions will be elected NEXT year by the residents of Preston.
- If you are interested in the Treasurer position, please speak with Pawel Glab or Christine Peters.
- If you're interested in the moderator position please speak with Aaron Shaull.
- If you are interested in or would like to nominate someone for either of these positions, please send Aaron Shaull an email so he knows where we stand in terms of candidates. Aaron will send out another email when we draw closer to election time (sometime after spring break), but he wanted to get seeds of interest planted.

Clean Carolina--This Weekend!
This Saturday, Clean Carolina will take place, and we would like to form a group to represent Preston in the event. It will be taking place this Saturday at noon, but we will meet in the Preston lobby at 11:45 am to walk over. So if you need community service hours or you would like to have some fun while helping out, please e-mail Edward Walsh or Mackenzie Arnold (our sustainability reps) to let them know if you have any questions. More information about the event is below!
--
What is Clean Carolina?Clean Carolina is a campus-wide community service project in which students recognize and embrace their responsibility to keep our campus community clean by simply walking and picking up trash on campus. Of course, it is our hope that students will engage in their behavior throughout the year. However, Clean Carolina helps to serve as a reminder that we value a clean community and that we each play a role in ensuring that we have one.
This year, Student Government in partnership with Carolina Service Council is sponsoring the annual Clean Carolina campus beautification effort. Saturday, February 27 at 12:00 PM, we invite you or your organization to be a part of this annual event.

Thanks to everyone who came out last Thursday night to the Preston Date Auction! We raised almost $1,300 when all was said and done. Thanks also to our willing auctionees, Dr. French and Joe Muscarella for doing an awesome job as our auctioneers, and everyone who helped behind the scenes to make this event a success. We couldn't have done it without you!

JAMAICA DEADLINE EXTENDED!
We've extended the deadline for Preston's Jamaica Service Learning program to Nov. 20. We've filled about half of our spaces, so there's still time and room to join in! Don't forget that there is funding available through the Dobson Program (http://www.sa.sc.edu/stlife/dobson.htm), and Preston residents are eligible for travel grants of up to $500.
Additionally, to see the program and its results firsthand, feel free to join us for the premiere of Beyond the Classroom: Jamaica, the film created, compiled, and edited by last year’s program participants. The showing will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. in the Russell House Theater.
Contact Alexis if you have questions, and we hope some of y'all are still considering applying!

New Course--Exclusive for Prestonites!
Jim (our very own Principal!) plans to teach a one-credit course this spring semester that will be limited to 20 Prestonites. "Americas's Curmudgeons" will be a mini-version of the course he teaches for the Honors College every Spring. Many of you have heard about it at PDining, and more than a few have seemed interested. So here's your chance!
The class will meet in PDining for one hour on Monday night and one hour on Tuesday night. Students may attend both but need attend only one, and may choose whichever night works out best that week.
Students will read and discuss selected writings of Bierce, Twain, Vonnegut, and Mencken. Assignments will include several short papers and a longer one at the end.
Stay tuned for details!

Preston Kickball!
This is just to let everyone know that the Preston Kickball Game will be Saturday at 3pm in the Strom. We still need people to sign up! We currently only have 12 on the Knowbles team as opposed to 16 on the Navels team. We need at least 11 to play, so leadership people really need to step up and come on out! This is only a one-time event this semester just in case anyone was confused. Sign-up sheets are at the front desk, if you still have not signed up. We will meet in the lobby at 2:30 tomorrow to head down to the Strom as a group if you want. If not you can just meet us down there. Everyone doesn't have to be there right as it starts or stay there for the entire time. Feel free to pop in and out whenever it best fits your schedule. The goal is just to get everyone together to have a good time in hopefully what will become a tradition. Also on another note, Knowbles will be wearing white and Navels will be wearing red. Again I hope to see everyone there. Let Tim Mauldin know if you have any additional questions!

Halloween in Preston
Preston's Halloween Tea was a success! As anticipated, the Pastides joined us, and Helen Doerpinghaus and Kirsten Kennedy also dropped by. The costumes were imaginative, and the food and conversation were certainly enjoyable! I hope y'all had a great time, and thanks to those of you who participated!
Eco-Contest!
Preston is currently involved in a campus-wide contest. Johnson Controls is and will continue to measure our energy and water usage. The dorm that reduces the most consumption of these materials will have the chance to win a lot of cool prizes such as an iPod. A commitment card has been e-mailed to everyone in Preston, and we'd like everyone in Preston to sign and return to either Edward Walsh or Mackenzie Arnold (Preston's Eco-Reps) by November 17th. Filling out these cards enters your name into the contest at the end of the semester.
We hope everyone participates in making Preston greener!

NEWSFLASH! Preston has exceeded it's goal of $1,000 of donations to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure! You know what that means... Jim Stiver has pink hair! This morning at 9:30am in the lobby, Jim's hair was dyed pink. If you haven't already, make sure you can see him at the Halloween Tea this afternoon!
After passing the $900 mark, a few more brave men went pink as well--Steve Zimovan, Zac Baker, Casey Spigner, and Cobin Sutton. Thanks for everyone's help, participation, and generous donations!
A Preston Doubleheader for Tuesday evening, Nov. 3rd!
Dr. Hal French will be hosting a dynamic duo of events this coming Tuesday evening, Nov. 3. Please join us for a second showing of RETHINK AFGHANISTAN in the seminar room at 7 p.m. and for our annual Full Moon Ceremony at 8:30 p.m. on Preston Green. Read on below for more details! PRESTON DOUBLEHEADER
1ST EVENT - Afghanistan Redux! We didn’t publicize the showing of RETHINK AFGHANISTAN very well for this last Tuesday, but some have suggested that we offer it again. Wednesday’s Gamecock editorial was titled, “Public Must Not Forget About Afghanistan War." It is a timely and vital issue, so we’ll offer it again in the Seminar Room at 7:00 on Tues., Nov. 3. Discussion will follow.
2ND EVENT- Our annual Full Moon Ceremony. This is a ceremony based primarily on Native American sources. Join us on Preston Green at 8:30 as we draw down the moon’s energies and honor all of nature’s rich gifts to us.
Please contact Dr. Hal French if you have more questions or would like more information!

Gone...But Not Forgotten: The Spirit Of Preston Lives
In the summer of 2008, “The Book of the Forgotten” was discovered by contractors while completing renovations to Preston Residential College. The book was hidden by a Preston resident of 6 years, Michael Chajewski who is of Polish descent. This book serves as a memoriam to the residents who have lived here in years past. Photographs reside within to ensure that, while they have moved on, their memories will live forever within its pages, waiting for future residents to discover.
The final page of “The Book of the Forgotten” contains a riddle which was meant to lead the finder of the book to the “spirit” of Michael. This riddle remained unsolved until Tuesday October 27, 2009. Led by Timothy Mauldin an expedition of residents embarked in a search for the hidden treasures that lie within Preston. The “spirit” of Michael was discovered by Pawel Glab (also of Polish descent) on that day. Michael left his spirit in the form of a petrified baby alligator along with a note to be read by those who found it.
Michael’s spirit is the spirit of us all. Our time living within the walls of Preston is short. The photographs, the smiles, and the laughs all come and go in an instant. This forgotten book serves as a testament to those memories. And while each of us will one day be gone…we will never be forgotten.
New memories will be added to the book and the Spirit will soon be returned to its proper resting place. “The Book of the Forgotten” will be hidden once again at the end of the year, in hopes that future generations of Preston residents may discover it and add their own chapters to the story of Preston.
--Timmy Mauldin
PS--Just in case you guys were wondering, "The Book of the Forgotten" along with the petrified baby alligator and Micheal's note are currently on display in the glass display case beside the backdoor of Preston. You will have only until Halloween night to see it because at the stroke of midnight the Spirit will return to its hiding place.

Passionately Pink for the Cure!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Preston College wants to help support the race for a cure. This is why we are raising funds through Passionately Pink for the Cure to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure's promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
Did you know that according to the American Cancer Society, about 1,479,350 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2009? This year, about 62,340 Americans are expected to die of cancer, that is more than 1,500 people a day. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. In the US, cancer accounts for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. Preston can make a difference! Every donation makes a difference.
For every $100 raised, one gentleman from Preston has kindly offered to dye their hair pink to show their support for the cause. These gentlemen are, Tripp McDaniel, Chad Tyndall, Logan Royals, Pawel Glab, Max Housley , Steve Zimovan, Zac Baker, Casey Spigner, Cobin Sutton, and Jim Stiver! That’s right! If we reach $1,000, Jim Stiver will have pink hair!
We have until October 30th to make donations. And hopefully we will see Jim Stiver with pink hair at the Halloween Tea on October 30th.
Any amount of donation would be greatly appreciated. We also accept checks and debit card donations. If you would like a receipt for your donation, you can write a check and make it out to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Also include Preston’s team number on the check. Our number is 6177002. If you write a check, please contact Monica Bracey to fill out a donation reply form. There is a jar for collecting donations at the front desk of Preston and you can also contact Monica Bracey, Margarett Peterson, or Samuel Barfield and we will collect your donation through, check, cash, or debit.
**UPDATE!**
There is a way to donate directly to the "Susan G. Komen for the Cure" in Preston College’s name online with your credit or debit card. It is quick and easy! Simply follow these six steps:
Step 1: Go to www.passionatelypink.com.
